The Bergen-Powered Afrik Lion

Reliable Propulsion for Nigerian Terminal Operations: The Bergen-Powered Afrik Lion

Built in 2011, Afrik Lion is a 32-metre ASD tug operating in Nigeria’s offshore and terminal sector. Designed for towage and fire-fighting duties, the vessel supports oil and gas infrastructure across the Gulf of Guinea, where consistent propulsion performance ensures safe and efficient marine operations.

Designed as part of the Damen ASD 3213 series and delivered by Damen Shipyards, the vessel combines high manoeuvrability with sustained bollard pull in a compact platform engineered for demanding service profiles.

Powered by Bergen Engines

Afrik Lion is equipped with 2 × Bergen C25:33L8P medium-speed propulsion engines, delivering a combined output of 4,800 kW.

The C25:33L platform is widely deployed across global tug and workboat fleets, featuring high torque at low rotational speeds, stable performance across repetitive load cycles, extended service intervals, and modular construction for structured maintenance planning.

Offshore Support

Nigeria’s offshore terminals operate in high ambient temperatures and intensive utilisation environments. Tug vessels must deliver consistent performance while supporting ship handling, escort operations and emergency response capability.

Afrik Lion shows an example of Bergen Engines’ broader role in the global tug and workboat segment. By combining mechanical durability with predictable lifecycle performance, Bergen propulsion continues to support terminal and offshore operators where operational consistency is essential.
