Powering Svitzer Vidar
When Svitzer Vidar joined the fleet of Svitzer Marine Ltd in 2019, the operator required a proven, high-uptime tug capable of precise manoeuvring and uninterrupted port operations. Delivered in 2005 by Astilleros Zamakona in Bilbao, Spain, for Remolcadores Barcelona S.A., she was originally named R Catalunya and designated as a fire-fighting vessel.
Bergen propulsion was selected to deliver dependable performance over decades of demanding service, originally in Spain and now in the United Kingdom.
Key Facts
Trusted Technical Solution
The vessel is powered by 2 × Bergen C25:33L8P medium-speed propulsion engines delivering a combined output of 4,800 kW (6,522 hp). The engine configuration was selected for strong low-speed torque and rapid load response, resilience under continuous cyclical towage and fire-fighting operations, extended service intervals compared to high-speed alternatives, and modular design that simplifies maintenance and maximises uptime.
This durability allows the vessel to maintain continuous availability for demanding harbour operations, whether manoeuvring large container ships or responding to emergency scenarios.
Partnership & Long-Term Value
From her early years as R Catalunya to her current role as Svitzer Vidar, Bergen engines have consistently delivered predictable performance and long operational life. Extended service intervals and a global support network ensure that the vessel remains available for day-to-day towage and emergency duties, maximising lifecycle value.
The relationship between Bergen Engines and Svitzer Marine Ltd highlights the importance of engineering reliability and long-term trust. For hard-working tugs and workboats, dependable propulsion is essential to safe, efficient, and continuous port operations.
