The Bergen-Powered MS Tenax
Delivered in 2006 to Østensjø Rederi AS, Tenax is part of a new generation of compact escort tugs developed to combine high steering forces with controlled, predictable propulsion.
Built by Astilleros Gondán S.A. in close cooperation with Voith Turbo and Carl J. Amundsen Consultants A/S, the vessel was designed to deliver the escort capability traditionally associated with larger platforms. Operating at Norway’s Sture terminal and other offshore locations, Tenax performs tanker escort, harbour towage and terminal support duties where steering force, response precision and mechanical reliability are essential.
Key Facts
Powered by Bergen Engines
Tenax is equipped with 2 × Bergen C25:33L8P propulsion engines, each delivering 2,400 kW, for a combined output of 4.8 MW. The engines are coupled to Voith Schneider propulsion units, providing precise thrust control and rapid response during escort and manoeuvring operations.
In escort operations, propulsion stability directly influences steering performance. The Bergen engines provide consistent power delivery across rapid load variations, supporting the hydrodynamic efficiency of the Voith units and the vessel’s advanced hull design.
Long-Term Operational Role
Tenax has served under long-term terminal contracts in Norway, including extended service at the Sture oil and gas terminal. In 2018, Tenax and her sister vessels played a critical role in emergency response operations following a collision involving the Norwegian frigate KNM Helge Ingstad near Sture. While Tenax maintained control of the tanker, sister vessels conducted evacuation and rescue operations. This emergency event showed the operational demands placed on terminal tugs and the importance of propulsion systems capable of delivering reliable performance under unexpected conditions.
