Securing Arctic Capability

Bergen Engines Extend Service Life of CCGS Terry Fox

The Canadian Coast Guard’s heavy icebreaker CCGS Terry Fox has operated in some of the world’s most demanding marine environments for more than four decades. Built in 1983 and acquired by the Coast Guard in the early 1990s, the vessel has escorted shipping, supported Arctic resupply missions, conducted sovereignty patrols, and enabled scientific expeditions across Canada’s North.

Now, as part of a major vessel life extension program, Terry Fox is entering a new chapter powered by four Bergen B33:45L8P propulsion engines. Selected by Heddle Marine Services, Bergen Engines will provide the reliable, modern propulsion platform required to extend the operational life of this proven heavy icebreaker.

Reliable Power for the Arctic

Terry Fox operates in environments where mechanical failure is not merely inconvenient, it is operationally critical. Ice resistance, shock loading, and prolonged low-speed high-torque operation place unique demands on propulsion systems.

By selecting Bergen Engines, the Canadian Coast Guard ensures dependable propulsion for sustained Arctic missions, strong torque delivery for heavy icebreaking, lifecycle support from an experienced engine manufacturer, and continuity of operations during Canada’s fleet transition period.

Built for the Arctic

Originally constructed to support Arctic offshore exploration, Terry Fox was engineered for strength, endurance, and sustained operation in first-year and moderate multi-year ice. After entering Coast Guard service, she became a core asset in both the Gulf of St. Lawrence winter season and Canada’s eastern Arctic summer sealift operations.

Her duties include escorting commercial vessels through heavy ice, supporting annual Arctic resupply to remote communities, search and rescue readiness, environmental response, and sovereignty patrols and seabed mapping missions under UNCLOS.
