Hybrid Power for the Artic
Bergen Powers MS Sunderøy
Delivered from Astilleros Gondan shipyard in Spain to Norway’s Prestfjord Seafood, the 77-metre stern trawler MS Sunderøy represents the next generation of Arctic fishing vessels. Designed by Kongsberg Maritime (NVC 372 design), the vessel combines hybrid propulsion, advanced onboard processing, and cutting-edge automation to set new standards in efficiency and environmental performance.
Key Facts
Hybrid Propulsion
At the heart of Sunderøy is a Bergen B33:45V12P main engine, delivering 7,200 kW at 750 rpm through a Kongsberg Promas propeller and rudder system, coupled with a hybrid shaft generator (HSG) for load smoothing and spinning reserve.
A Bergen C25:33L6A genset provides auxiliary power, completing a fully integrated Bergen propulsion and power package. This hybrid configuration allows the vessel to operate with optimal fuel economy and reduced emissions, while maintaining full power availability and responsiveness for demanding trawl operations.
A Trusted Partnership
This vessel marks a milestone in Prestfjord’s relationship with Bergen Engines, following the success of the trawler Holmøy in 2016 – the first-ever installation of Bergen’s B33:45 engine series. Building on that legacy, Sunderøy integrates Bergen’s proven propulsion technology with hybrid efficiency, ensuring clean, quiet, and cost-effective operation in demanding conditions.
By combining Bergen Engines’ proven propulsion systems with Kongsberg’s advanced hybrid and automation technology, Sunderøy stands as one of the world’s most advanced and environmentally responsible trawlers – ready for a new era of sustainable fishing in the Arctic.
