Reliable Twin-Engine Performance: Bergen Powers Samherji‘s Pelagic Operations

Samherji’s Vilhelm Þorsteinsson is one of the most advanced pelagic vessels in the Icelandic fleet, purpose built to deliver high efficiency, low emissions, and exceptional catch quality across both purse seining and pelagic trawling.

Built by Karstensens Shipyard in Denmark and delivered in 2021, the vessel replaces an older namesake that served the company for more than two decades. From early design stages, Samherji worked closely with Karstensens to ensure the new vessel met demanding standards for energy efficiency, safety, comfort, and flexible fishing performance.

Key Facts

Twin Bergen Engines at the Heart of a Smart Propulsion System

The vessel is powered by two Bergen B33:45L6P main engines, each delivering 3,600 kW. Together they drive a single Siemens Flender propeller through a 2-in-1 gearbox. The configuration allows Vilhelm Þorsteinsson to reach speeds up to 17 knots, while also enabling highly efficient transit operations where only one engine is required.

Running on a single Bergen engine during long steaming legs cuts fuel consumption significantly. When the vessel is engaged in power-intensive trawling or purse seine operations, both engines operate together, supplying ample energy for propulsion, hydraulics, and onboard electrical loads through the shaft alternators.

Industry Recognition and Milestones

Built by Karstensen Shipyard AS in Skagen, Denmark, in 2021, Vilhelm Þorsteinsson reflects Samherji’s commitment to innovative fishing technology. CEO Kristján Vilhelmsson highlights the vessel’s adaptability: “This ship is very well equipped with all the latest technology for handling the catch. A vessel like this, operating with both trawl and purse seine, has variable energy requirements. That’s why we opted for two engines. Steaming home we can use just one engine, and the fuel consumption is much less.”

The vessel sails from its home port in Akureyri, Iceland, and operates across Icelandic waters, including Loophole and Smuguna, maximizing value from each fishing trip while minimizing energy use.
