A Strong Start for MS Knester
Bergen Propulsion Drives 385-tonne First Haul.
As MS Knester left Karstensens Skibsværft and began fishing operations in 2025, the expectation was for a steady introduction period. Instead, the vessel delivered one of the most notable starts in recent years: 385 tonnes of mackerel on its first trip. Two voyages later, the total reached 565 tonnes, with no reported commissioning delays or propulsion issues.
For Knester AS, the result confirmed that the investment in a new, combined purse seiner and pelagic trawler had landed where it mattered most; reliable catches from day one and predictable running conditions for the crew.
Key Facts
Bergen Engines at the Heart of the Vessel
Propulsion is built around a Bergen B33:45L9P main engine rated at 5,400 kW, selected for its ability to combine efficient towing power during trawling with steady low- RPM purse seine operations.
The main engine drives a Brunvoll Volda CP95/4 controllable-pitch propeller through a two-speed ACG980/ PS750 gearbox, giving the vessel the flexibility to adjust propeller speed to match fishing modes and weather conditions. A 3200 kW Marelli shaft generator supplies the ship’s electrical load and is fully integrated into the power management system.
Together, the propulsion and power arrangement gives the vessel a broad operational window – high bollard pull for trawling, controlled RPM for purse seining, and efficient steaming when transiting between grounds.
Strong Early Performance
Fishing companies typically expect a tuning period as crews adapt to a new hull and propulsion arrangement. According to the shipowner, the Knester required none. Multiple test trawls and net trials were completed without interruption, and the vessel immediately delivered strong catches.
“This boat has performed above expectations,” says Kai Eliassen, general manager of the shipping company. “It has worked extremely well from the first day.”
