The Bergen-Powered Jan Mayen Class
The Jan Mayen Class represents the most capable offshore patrol vessels ever delivered to the Norwegian Coast Guard. Built by Vard and designed by LMG Marin, the class brings greater size, reach and resilience than the outgoing Nordkapp vessels. Their role is central to Norway’s maritime security including search and rescue, environmental protection, oil spill response, sovereignty patrols and long-duration missions across vast Arctic waters.

Powering Jan Mayen
Each Jan Mayen-class vessel is equipped with four Bergen B33:45L8A generator sets, delivering 4.8 MW each. These engines are engineered for high efficiency and stable output, forming the backbone of the ships’ diesel-electric propulsion system.
A defining feature of the class is its ability to operate in temperatures down to –25°C. Extreme cold places significant stress on fuel systems, lubrication, and engine components but Bergen engines are built to run reliably in varying conditions, ensuring steady power when it matters most.
Built for Strategic Reach
With an overall length of 136 meters and accommodation for 100 personnel, the ships can support complex missions for more than eight weeks at a time. Their ice-strengthened hulls allow independent navigation through icy waters, maintaining Norwegian presence in regions where conditions shift quickly and unpredictably.
A large flight deck and hangar support helicopter operations, including refuelling while hovering (HIFR). The class also incorporates modern sensors, advanced fire control, and CBRN protection, ensuring the vessels remain mission-ready in all scenarios.
With these capabilities, the Jan Mayen class strengthens Norway’s ability to protect its maritime interests across one of the world’s most demanding operating environments.
