When MV Northumberland entered a new phase of service between Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia in 2024, her new owner, Northumberland Ferries Limited, faced a critical decision: whether to switch propulsion suppliers during retrofit, or continue with Bergen.
After more than 15 years of proven, reliable performance from the original Bergen K-series gas engines, the operator elected to upgrade with new-generation Bergen C25:33 engines rather than move to a competing brand. The decision reflected long-term satisfaction with engine lifespan, operational reliability and the strength of Bergen’s global service support.

Proven Performance
Built in 2006 by VARD Brattvaag, the vessel originally named MV Fanafjord was equipped with four Bergen KV gas engines, delivering a total output of 12MW. These engines operated reliably for over a decade on one of Norway’s busiest ferry connections south of Bergen.
In 2023, during preparations for redeployment to Canada, Bergen Engines was selected to retrofit the vessel with two new Bergen C25:33L9 generating sets. Rather than re-engineering the vessel around a new propulsion brand, the owner chose continuity and retaining Bergen as a long-term partner.
The reasoning was practical and strategic; Documented lifespan of the previous K engines, proven operational reliability in intensive ferry service, established service partnership in Canada and technical familiarity, and confidence in Bergen’s global support network.

Today, Mv Northumberland provides an important connection between Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. The route is more than a transportation link, it is and economic lifeline, supporting regional trade, tourism and employment.
Following the loss of the MV Holiday Island to fire damage, maintaining consistent two-vessel service became a national priority. Reliable propulsion and power generation are therefore central to operational continuity.
