MS Kvitbjørn
Delivered in 2015, Kvitbjørn was among the first purpose-built LNG-powered Ro-Ro cargo vessels designed for fixed liner trade in Northern Europe, and the world’s first vessel to sail from Asia to Europe solely on LNG.
Constructed by Tsuji Heavy Industries Co. Ltd and based on Rolls-Royce’s Environship concept, the vessel combines advanced hull efficiency with proven Bergen gas engine technology.
Key Facts
Built for Consistency
Weather exposure along the Norwegian coastline, frequent port calls, and coordinated inland logistics require propulsion systems that perform without interruption.
The Bergen B35:40L9 gas engine delivers high thermal efficiency exceeding 49%, stable output across variable load conditions, seamless integration with hybrid shaft generator systems, and smooth propulsion response in confined coastal waters.
Combined with a vertical stem bow and optimized hull geometry, Kvitbjørn reduces resistance while maintaining service speeds close to 19 knots. This enables operators to maintain timetable precision without increasing fuel consumption.
Proven LNG Endurance
At delivery, Kvitbjørn completed one of the longest LNG-only voyages recorded at the time, sailing from China to Norway entirely on natural gas. This early demonstration of range and reliability reinforced the viability of pure gas propulsion in commercial deep-sea transit.
Since entering service, the vessel has consistently supported weekly multipurpose services, transporting rolling cargo, containers, reefer goods, and palletized freight. Her LNG range of approximately 3,400 nautical miles allows round-trip operations between the Netherlands and Northern Norway without refuelling, supporting efficient voyage planning and reduced port dependency.
