Bergen Engines and Marelli Motori Achieve German Grid Code Certification

DNV approval confirms compliance with VDE-AR-N 4110 and 4120 – unlocking new opportunities in one of Europe’s most advanced power markets.

Bergen Engines’ B35:40 and B36:45 gas engine series, paired with Marelli Motori generators, have been certified fully compliant with one of the most demanding grid standards in the world.

Testing for the German grid code certification was carried out by the Measurement Institute of MOE, in line with the FGW Technical Guidelines (TR3). Over several weeks, the teams verified the genset’s performance through short-circuit (LVRT and OVRT) testing, full and partial-load runs, and assessments of reactive and active power capability, protection, and control response.

“This is an important milestone for both companies,” said product manager Aleksandre Piranishvili. “Earning German grid-code certification confirms that our combined genset solution performs reliably under the most demanding conditions, and that it’s ready to serve customers in one of Europe’s most advanced power systems.”

Groundwork for future growth

Germany’s grid codes are among the most rigorous in the world. Achieving this certification opens the door for Bergen and Marelli to take part in new utility, balancing-power, and data-center projects across the country and to pursue similar approvals across Europe. “Our work with DNV and MOE’s testing institute set the foundation for future certifications,” said Piranishvili. “It proves the strength of our collaboration and our commitment to building technology that meets the expectations of modern grids.”

Decades of reliability, now validated for Germany

With 80 years of experience in medium-speed engine design, Bergen Engines has long been recognized for reliability, long running hours, and efficiency. The B35 and B36 series bring that legacy forward in combining robust design with advanced combustion and control systems that respond quickly to changing grid conditions.

By meeting Germany’s grid requirements, Bergen Engines and Marelli Motori strengthen their position as trusted partners for European power developers. The certification ensures faster project approvals and simplified integration for future energy installations across the continent.

ABOUT BERGEN ENGINES
Bergen Engines produces medium-speed liquid and gas fueled engines and generator sets are supplied to a broad range of land-based, commercial marine, and naval applications. The Bergen name is a watchword for quality and reliability in its field. The tradition of engineering in Bergen, Norway, dates to 1855 when the original company Bergen Mekaniske Verksted (BMV) was founded. In 1946, the company built its first diesel engine and has since commissioned over 7,500 of its iconic liquid and gas fueled engines. Around half of them are still in operation today; such is the quality and reliability of a Bergen engine. Formerly Rolls-Royce Bergen Engines, on 31st December 2021, the company became part of the privately owned British engineering group, Langley Holdings plc
