Bergen, Norway — Bergen Engines, in partnership with Marelli Motori, has received formal equipment certification from DNV for compliance with Poland’s Network Code Requirements for Synchronous Power Generating Modules (PGM) Type B, C, and D, enabling immediate deployment of its gas gensets across the Polish power market.

The certification applies to Bergen’s B35:40 and B36:45 natural gas engine series paired with Marelli Motori alternators as a complete genset solution, confirming full compliance with national grid connection and performance requirements for synchronous generation.

Supporting a Power System Under Transition and Pressure

Poland’s energy system is undergoing a complex and high-stakes transformation. Coal’s share of electricity generation has fallen from 91% two decades ago to around 51% today yet remains the dominant source of power. Renewable energy, such as wind and solar, now account for approximately 25% of generation and more than 1.6 million prosumers contributing to distributed supply.

However, recent data indicates a period of slowing growth in renewables, with total renewable generation holding at just under 30% in 2025, well below the EU average. This evolving energy mix is increasing the need for flexible, dispatchable power to maintain grid stability and support further renewable integration.

Recent periods of record electricity demand and generation surpassed 30GW for the first time in the country’s history, highlighting the importance of reliable capacity and fast-response power in ensuring system resilience for years to come.

Flexible Gas Engine Power for Stability and Growth

Gas-fired generation is expected to play an increasingly important role in Poland’s energy mix, providing both capacity reserves and the flexibility required to balance intermittent renewable energy. The newly certified Bergen–Marelli genset solution is designed to meet these needs.

With fast start-up times, high efficiency, and strong load-following capability, the B35:40 and B36:45 engine platforms are well suited for participation in Poland’s capacity and balancing markets, supporting system adequacy while enabling further growth in renewable generation.

“Poland’s energy system is evolving quickly, but maintaining stability is becoming more complex,” said product manager Aleksandre Piranishvili. “Flexible gas engine power can play a critical role in bridging that gap; supporting renewables while ensuring reliable supply when it’s needed most.”

Proven Technology, Ready for Deployment

Bergen Engines has more than 80 years of experience in engine design, dating back to 1943, and over three decades of supplying gas engine power solutions for power generation. This legacy is supported by a track record of reliability, efficiency, and long operational life in power systems worldwide.

With certification now in place, Bergen Engines and Marelli Motori are positioned to support a wide range of applications in Poland, including utility-scale balancing power, industrial energy supply, decentralized generation, and data center power solutions. The approval reduces project risk, accelerates time to deployment, and provides developers with a compliant, ready-to-integrate solution.

As Poland continues to modernize its energy infrastructure and expand renewable capacity, flexible generation technologies will play a critical role in ensuring a stable and resilient power system.

ABOUT BERGEN ENGINES
Bergen Engines produces medium-speed liquid and gas fueled engines and generator sets are supplied to a broad range of land-based, commercial marine, and naval applications. The Bergen name is a watchword for quality and reliability in its field. The tradition of engineering in Bergen, Norway, dates to 1855 when the original company Bergen Mekaniske Verksted (BMV) was founded. In 1946, the company built its first diesel engine and has since commissioned over 7,500 of its iconic liquid and gas fueled engines. Around half of them are still in operation today; such is the quality and reliability of a Bergen engine. Formerly Rolls-Royce Bergen Engines, on 31st December 2021, the company became part of the privately owned British engineering group, Langley Holdings plc
ABOUT MARELLI MOTORI
Marelli Motori is a leading manufacturer of electric motors and generators. Founded in Arzignano, northern Italy, in 1891, the company enjoys worldwide brand recognition in the marine, oil & gas, power generation, co-generation, hydro and other industrial sectors. Marelli Motori is part of the Power Solutions Division of the British engineering and industrial group, Langley Holdings plc, together with Bergen Engines (formerly Rolls-Royce Bergen Engines) Norway and Piller Power Systems, Germany.
