Bergen, Norway – Bergen Engines has been chosen to power the world’s largest stun & bleed vessel, setting a new standard for aquaculture technology.

The contract, signed with Freire Shipyard in Spain, reinforces Bergen’s reliability to deliver high-performance propulsion engines to the fishing and aquaculture industries. The new vessel will be owned by Napier and operated in cooperation with a leading aquaculture company in Norway.

The new vessel “Tauriko” will be powered by the Bergen B33:45L9P engine, selected for its fuel efficiency, extended maintenance intervals, and robust performance.

Built on Experience
This project builds on Bergen’s successful record with Napier’s existing fleet, including “Tauroa and Tautiki,” two vessels designed by Salt Ship Design and delivered to support aquaculture operations in Norway. The vessels feature an onboard handling capacity up to 750 tonnes and can process 36,000 fish per hour.

The newly contracted vessel will expand with Salt’s proven design platform and feature increased capacity, higher speeds, and greater onboard storage to support growing operations.

Why Stun & Bleed Vessels Matter
Unlike conventional live fish carriers, stun & bleed vessels are designed for the most humane and sustainable fish handling. Fish are stunned immediately after being pumped onboard from a fish farm, reducing stress and preserving product quality. This method also helps the environment by improving fish welfare and reducing death, leading lower emissions per kilo transported.

By processing fish at sea, these vessels improve animal welfare, work more efficiently, and align with evolving regulations and sustainability expectations in the global seafood market.

The Bergen B33:45L
Designed for reliable, low-cost operation, Bergen’s B33:45L engine is ideal for modern vessels in a variety of applications.

Key features include:
• Power output: 3.6–5.4 MW
• Extended service intervals up to 25,000 hours
• IMO Tier II compliant without SCR; Tier III with SCR
• Low vibration and noise levels
• Fast load response and modular, service-friendly construction

Built in Europe using high-quality components, the engines are supported by a global network of trained service partners, equipped with OEM-certified parts to ensure reliable support and minimal downtime, wherever the vessel operates.

Proven Power for a Demanding Industry
This contract adds to Bergen’s growing portfolio of advanced vessels in the aquaculture sector. With a reputation for reliability, low lifecycle costs, and responsive service, Bergen continues to be a preferred propulsion partner for shipowners and shipyards across Europe and beyond.

ABOUT BERGEN ENGINES
Bergen Engines produces medium-speed liquid and gas fueled engines and generator sets are supplied to a broad range of land-based, commercial marine, and naval applications. The Bergen name is a watchword for quality and reliability in its field.
The tradition of engineering in Bergen, Norway, dates to 1855 when the original company Bergen Mekaniske Verksted (BMV) was founded. In 1946, the company built its first diesel engine and has since commissioned over 7,500 of its iconic liquid and gas fueled engines. Around half of them are still in operation today; such is the quality and reliability of a Bergen engine. Formerly Rolls-Royce Bergen Engines, on 31st December 2021, the company became part of the privately owned British engineering group, Langley Holdings plc.
