FLEXIBLE POWER AND HEAT PRODUCTION IN THE NETHERLANDS

In Vierpolders, powerful commercial, environmental and operational benefits are stemming from the installation of two Bergen K-gas engines, each producing 2.4MWe.

Who: Van Marrewijk
What: 2 x B35:40V16 natural gas engines delivering 4.8MWe
Where: Vierpolders, Netherlands

The fertile soils of Vierpolders, on the island of Voome Putten in the Netherlands, are the home of the Van Marrewijk greenhouse company, where 21st-century technology is being exploited to benefit both the growth of tomatoes and the economy of the region. The extensive van Marrewijk greenhouses specialise in producing four types of tomatoes and comprise one of the most modern glasshouse horticulture facilities in the Netherlands, where this industry earns some €3.2 billion a year.

All heat produced by the two B35:40V16 natural gas engine system is used in the greenhouses, with a storage tank installed to provide sufficient capacity without the need for a dump cooler.

Carbon dioxide from the K-gas engines’ flue gases is cleaned in a catalytic converter and fed in precisely measured quantities to the greenhouses, where it enriches natural CO2 levels in the atmosphere effectively to ‘fertilise’ the growth of tomatoes by creating the perfect environmental balance. The catalyst ensures ultra-low levels of impurities.

At the same time, electricity produced by the CHP system provides assimilation lighting for some 3,000 hours per year. When electricity from the grid is rated at high or medium tariffs, electricity is fed into the grid and sold on the open market, for approximately 2,000 hours each year. Electricity is supplied to the grid at all times of peak tariff prices.

The Bergen Engines units run either in island mode or in parallel with the grid, depending on instructions from the system’s computer-based controller.
